Rogue tokens
The following pieces are believed to be counterfeits of the earlier coins
Some are rare, some are common, some are valuable, some are not...
********************************************************************
Rogue's gallery: counterfeits?
********************************************************************
Octagonal 1/4
*****************
1857 Octagonal quarter. Struck from Kroll's dies, but apparently a much later date restrike
Restrikes are reeded, "originals" have plain edges. This example is bright, lustrous, and
well struck. The originals are normally dark, dull, and weakly struck in the center.
Kroll produced backdated, denominated tokens (properly counterfeits) in the 1890s in NYC.
These coins are die linked to Wreath 5 tokens, although it is not clear that the Wreath 5
tokens were made by Kroll.

Round 1/4
*****************
No date Liberty, style copies BG224
Rarity 8! Only 3 known. The Bass specimen (listed as unique) sold for $8625 in 1999. This one is significantly finer.
Jay Roe has indicated that more probably exist.

Round 1/2
*****************
1854 Liberty head
Convincing copy of BG1304, believed to have been made late in the 20th century
This one is noted as a counterfeit in both the Breen-Gillio and Doering books
Note the very large, badly shaped obverse stars & the different Liberty head device.
Reeded edge.
1854 Liberty head
It sure looks like it ought to be real, but it isn't
Style unlike any good variety. Labeled as a counterfeit by Doering, not listed by Breen
presumably for the same reason
1858 Liberty with 1/2 DOL on reverse. Very similar to D341 but obverse differs
This piece also listed under Wreath5 tokens
D341 belongs in this gallery too, but I don't have a picture I can use.
1873 Liberty head
Sloppy copy of BG1012, unlisted anywhere. Smooth polished edge, unlike any genuine coin,
also thicker & much heavier than a genuine piece. Apparently 24K gold, again unlike any
genuine coin. Jay Roe reported a counterfeit of BG1201, might he have been looking at this
one and gotten the numbers scrambled?

Octagonal 1
*****************
1863 Octagonal dollar. Struck from Kroll's dies, but apparently a much later date restrike
Restrikes are reeded, "originals" have plain edges. This example is bright, lustrous, and
well struck. The top flat has been filed (were they issued this way?)
Kroll produced backdated, denominated tokens (properly counterfeits) in the 1890s in NYC.
These coins are die linked to Wreath 5 tokens, although it is not clear that the Wreath 5
tokens were made by Kroll.

Round 1
*****************
A counterfeit of BG1201 has been reported (Brasher Bulletin V1 N2 p10, from the annual
meeting minutes)
