This is my brief list of Period 1 California Fractional gold. The idea here is to give a very short written attribution guide and rarity information. Those marked with ! are present in the collection of Mike Locke Those marked with + have direct archeological evidence of being period 1 coins. Evidence is either found on Winfield Scot treasure (1853), earlier die state of Winfield Scot treasure coin, discussed in the Daily Alta California, or illustrated in a Bankers coin identification manual from 1859 or earlier. RE = Normal looking reeded edge PE = plain edge CRE = Crudely reeded edge (taken from Burnie) or poorly reeded edge per Ed Lee URE = Uneven or irregular reeded edge (mostly Frontier & Deviercy) IRE = Incomplete reeded edge, see notes below This information not complete in the references that I can find, so it is limited to the pieces that I could find some information on. It is very important to examine the condition of the edge of any California gold coin. Many of the survivors survived because they were built into a piece of jewelry. Because of the very high prices of these pieces during the late 1980s, many of these ex-jewelry pieces have been professionally repaired, often making this offensive damage difficult to detect (the same applies to coin holes). First, make sure that the coin is round or that the edges of the octagon are straight. Next check the edge for irregularities. Here is where knowing what is normal is a must, as some issues were irregular when made. An area of missing reeding is usually a "red flag", although some pieces are so weakly struck that the planchet did not get fully struck against the collar. After soldering or desoldering, the coin must be cleaned, so examine coins that appear to have been cleaned, polished, or that have surface roughness extra carefully. Keep in mind that a really good repair on a very rare coin should not affect the value severely, while a botched repair on the more common piece may render it valueless. Last updated 8/8/96 Corrected rarity of BG215 and one other (a typo on my part) Added notes about die states and some possible improperly classed varieties. Updated 8/18/96 Added lots won from Heritage 8/96 sale Added die state notes from Heritage 8/96 sale Fixed errors noted on this list during Heritage sale Updated 8/31/96 Added notes about published historical information Updated 9/7/96 Added edge notes Updated 12/11/96 Added populations from the Senator Natcher collection sale at the Heritage auction at ANA 1996. Added Mike's Rarity estimates on an extra line beneath the description, with a leading "----". Rarity estimates are based on an aggregate of auction appearances, PCGS population, Natcher population, and Breen's rarity ratings. Updated 12/12/96 Added pricing guide--still incomplete Updated 1/21/97 Added and renumbered some die states. Reformated rarity information. Moved Breen's rarity estimate to follow Mike's rarity estimate. Breen's estimate preceded by BG- Updated 2/9/97 Corrected a few typos. Fixed descriptions of BG227 and BG227W. Added price entry for BG220 Updates 8/28/97 Added lots won from Heritage 8/97 Updated 10/23/97 Added notes to BG533 Updated 11/8/97 Added BG217a Updated 10/7/98 Added a few coins that I have purchased LR7, R7, HR7, and R8 revised slightly from Breen, causing a few rarity ratings to change even thought the population estimates are still the same R2 500+ R3 201-500 R4 76-200 Breen uses HR4 = 76-99 R5 46-75 Breen uses LR5 = 60-75 HR5 31-45 LR6 25-30 | R6 19-24 | Combined similar to URS6 HR6 13-18 | LR7 9-12 | Combined similar to URS5 R7 5-8 Same as URS4 HR7 3-4 Same as URS3 R8 1-2 Same as URS2 Frontier & Deviercy coins appear to be gold plated over lower grade gold. The plating is of poor quality and often peels from the coin. BG101-107, 201-216, 301-307, 401-406, 501-512, and 601-603 are attributed to F&D Also all of the GG coins are attributed to F&D manufacture. It is possible that die rust and planchet peel could be confused. ********************* OCTAGONAL QUARTERS !+BG 101, B6 L3A D21, RE, typical head, 9 6pt stars, large beaded circle,"DOLLAR" curved, 1853 Three die states: DS I perfect, DSII obv rusts, DSIII extreme obv rust ----R5, BG-HR5, Natcher pop 4 95 FPL2 MS63 "flakes" $295; 1/95 B&M MS64 $330;6/96 Superior MS60 $462 !BG 102, B4 L2A D20, PE, large ugly head, 4 6pt stars, reverse as above (MS63+ PL) Apparently 3 die states: DSI rev as on BG101, DSII circular defect around "dolLar", DSIII rust above head at coronet point, and star 1 to chin.
