Literature
About book grading, I follow my interpretation of the standard
established by George Kolbe:
Good=very beat up, may have major tears, missing covers, water damage,
etc. All text readable and present unless otherwise noted,
VG=obvious problems but not falling apart or badly torn or water damaged,
Fine = Nice copy with minor scuffs, soiling, creases or graffiti,
VF = Really nice copy with no obvious problems although some very minor
wear and discoloration may be present,
As new= just what it sounds like, the book may not be perfect because many
books are not perfect as made, however there is no evidence that this book
has been used at all.

Australia
All George V coins graded strictly by the guide in the back of "Coins of
the British Oceania" by Clark. Others with less clear markers graded on
a similar, very strict scale. The most similar grading system in use in
the US is the Early American Coppers (EAC) Inc. standard.
choice => significantly better than the stated grade, but not quite good
enough to make the next grade.
about (as in about XF or AXF) => very, very close to the stated grade, but
doesn't quite make it.
nice, attractive, etc => above average color and/or fewer than typical
marks for the grade. Eye pleasing.
scudzy => more than the usual number of problems for the grade
UNC: Not even a hint of wear. Any striking weakness is explicitly noted.
AU: Only the slightest hint of wear. Similar to most slabs at "MS-62"
XF: 8 full pearls in crown base band (the two pearls
in front of the center diamond may be a bit weak, but they will be fully
present), medals on King's chest show detail, dots on reverse mostly
rounded. Slight, but noticeable wear on the tops of things only. Some
striking weakness is common, especially on the penny at the vertical row
of pearls in the crown, the medals, and the scrolls on the reverse and a
coin will be marked down 1/2 to 1 full grade for these problems.
VF: 6 full pearls in crown base band, at least 3 points of the center
diamond show. Medals on chest nearly flat, but other details on King
bold. Reverse dots show a little bit of rounding. Coins in this
condition are often labeled XF by US graders.
F: bottom line of crown base band separate from hair, ear separate from hair.
Dots on reverse flat.
VG: some of the most protected jewels in crown base band still present.
Crown base band merged into hair at center, ear merged into hair at top.
This is the grade usually found in junk boxes.
G: Unusual to find one this worn. Crown base band worn into hair nearly
completely away all the way across, ear merged into hair most of the way
around, very little detail left in King's coat.

***TOKENS***
In general, pieces dated 1869 and later are thought to have been made in the year
marked on the token. Tokens dated 1849-1865 are thought to have been backdated and
made much later than the date marked on the token. There are a few exceptions, and
if I have any of these for sale I will describe it accordingly.
The leading 5 digit numbers seen on these listings are my inventory numbers.
Inventory numbers that start with an R indicate tokens from the Jack Rowe (Jay Roe)
California Gold token collection.
Inventory numbers that start with a K indicate tokens from the Art Kagin
California Gold token collection.
Inventory numbers that start with an H indicate tokens that were purchased directly
from Daniel Hurkett.
Please be sure to include the inventory numbers when inquiring or purchasing. Thanks.

WHAT IS THIS DOING HERE?!
This is a private issue gold token struck in 1889 at the Argentine
national mint for Jewish Romanian gold miner Julio Popper. Popper
had tried making his own dies and striking the tokens himself, but
the results were unsatisfactory. He sent 10kg of native gold from
near the antarctic to the mint in Buenos Aires to make some
number of 1 gram and 5 gram tokens.

Bear #4, #7, #10, and some #9 were apparently made by Sidney Smith and Art Smith
in the 1960-1978 time frame using remnants of the Bear2 tooling. Jay Roe
confirmed that the later pieces were made by Art Smith by asking Art Smith.
Daniel Hurkett reports that a group of the earlier pieces that he bought from
Sidney Smith in 1965 provided the inspiration for his tokens (Bear1).
They have been observed in gilt-brass, brass, gilt-silver, and silver.
The silver tokens are much scarcer than the others.
I usually have many of these in stock. Please ask if you don't see what

Indian head and Arms of California Wreath #4a, #4b, #4c, and #4e are a
series of tokens made by Nathan Joseph of San Francisco after the
1906 earthquake and fire. They were offered in 4K, 10K and 12K solid gold.
It appears that wreath4b, exclusively with the "thick neck" head was made
first, while wreath4a came last.
It is less clear who made the Liberty head tokens in this series. I currently
believe that they were made by Joseph's successor circa late 1920s.
The Liberty heads are much harder to locate than the Indian heads.

About 6 thin radial cuts on the obverse lower the condition to

claims that such cuts may have been made by sailors who were required
to use something other than the railings to trim their hand rolled
cigarettes. The coin clearly has circulated after the cuts were
made, since they are toned to match the coin and have rounded edges.
